Ending a marriage is never an easy thing to do. Protecting yourself financially and mentally from an impending divorce is a necessity. If you do not protect yourself you can walk away broke and alone.

Think twice before acting, better yet three or four times. Imagine at all times that your children and a judge are watching and reading everything you write. Anything you write in an email or a text message can be used in court, as evidence. How would the judge like your Facebook profile? Keep your temper in check; you do not want to do something that might result in a restraining order. Do not agree to anything without consulting your attorney first.

Secure your property. Check your joint bank and credit card accounts regularly to ensure that unexpected withdrawals or charges have been made. You may want to separate or close joint bank accounts and credit cards. It is also a good idea to secure your personal property that may have sentimental value where they cannot be misplaced or damaged.

Save Money. Making a budget and sticking to it is always a good idea, especially during a separation. When one household becomes two households, the expenses go up and the income goes down. It might be better to pay joint debts out of joint account instead of your separate account, but check with your attorney first.

Collect Financial Documents Make photocopies of important documents and keep them in a safe place so that you can provide them to your attorney when asked. If you can access to your spouse’s records legally, make copies of them too. This could save you a ton of money in legal fees, as well.

Keep trustworthy friends and family close. Friend’s will take sides, so watch whom you trust and confide in. supportive friends and family members who are able to keep your confidences and empathize with your feelings are a valuable asset. Ask friends or family members for references for an attorney and hire one that you like, it is very important to understand what your attorney is saying and for them to listen when you speak. Consider attorneys who specialize in divorce and know the ins and outs of this intricate area of legal practice.
